Edward Garrard and Jason Hall ripped Hethersett & Tas Valley’s top seven wickets out for 28 on the way to bowling their visitors out for 135 to set up a 10 wicket win for Southwold, with Alex Britten (83*) and Ezra Fuller (30*) steering their side to victory.
Hethersett won the toss and elected to bat but were immediately on the back-foot as Hall bowled Stuart Last first ball, whilst Garrard quickly had figures of 4/7 as he removed Nick Morton, Mark Worley, Richard Ellis and Tom Worley. Hall meanwhile added Joe McKenna and Ed Blowfield to his collection, but at the other end Stuart Cooper began to counter-attack. In partnership with Craig Henderson, the pair recovered from 28/7 to 88/8 as Cooper ended up on 81*, an innings studded with thumping hits over the leg side. The resurgence was ended as Henderson holed out to deep midwicket, but Cooper kept going whilst Lucy Morton blocked out at the other end. Cooper survived several confident lbw and stumping appeals before Morton popped a catch to short mid-on, and Sam Woodruff quickly followed, slapping a catch to midwicket. The visitors were all out for 135, a remarkable comeback after their top order capitulated.
In reply, Britten and Fuller began watchfully before taking 15 from Last’s second over, an assault which started their attack on the total. Fuller picked up quick singles and placed the ball well through the infield before finding the boundary more comfortably, whilst Britten moved to his fifty with a drive through the offside off Henderson. Hethersett’s captain shuffled his bowlers but could not find the breakthrough as Southwold’s opening pair completed a confident 10 wicket win, Fuller dabbing the ball through gully for the winning run.
The win extends Southwold’s lead at the top of Division 5E – next week they travel to Diss for their penultimate game of 2015.
