2nd XI Beat Brooke

Southwold 2nd XI kept up their winning start to the season with a home win against Brooke 3rd XI on a bitterly cold day on Southwold Common.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Southwold made a steady start. Brooke’s opening bowler Carver showed good control bowling into the wind and up the slope while Andrew Cross, with the elements in his favour, found it difficult to get his line. However, Cross did find a good one to york opening batsman Simon Bowles (6) with the score at 14 to take the first wicket.

Shane Gosling joined Ezra Fuller and after a quiet start the pair continued where they had left off the previous week and built a good partnership of 91 before Fuller (31) was clean bowled trying to force Joe Wicks through the onside with the score on 105.

Matt Barbrook came in and immediately looked to increase the run rate and he and Gosling (88) took the score to 165 when Gosling tried to hit T Wicks over the long on boundary into the wind only to be caught by the waiting fielder. Fergus Jones (9*) joined Barbrook (41*) for the final 3 overs to take the score to a very respectable 190/3 after the home side’s 45 overs.

In reply Brooke got off to a poor start as they lost their opener and captain Dale for a duck in the 4th over as he tried to clip Chris Hodge through midwicket, only to get a leading edge to Jason Griffiths at point. Young Tom Wicks came in and immediately upped the tempo before the visitors lost their 2nd wicket in the 10th over at when Hodge bowled a beauty to clean bowl Austin, as the hosts were found themselves at 35/2.

Wicks was joined by his brother Joe and the pair batted delightfully and without fear until Jake Fuller flighted one that beat Tom (32) to be excellently stumped by Bowles. Incoming batsman Dicks made his intentions clear from the start, hitting two early boundaries keeping Brooke in the contest, until he was caught behind by Bowles in Ezra Fuller’s first over, slashing at one outside off stump as the visitors stumbled at 89/4.

Carver (29) and Wicks kept the game interesting with Southwold spilling a couple of chances until Gosling, bowling into the wind, deceived Carver to bowl him at 134-5. Wicks (37*) and Ward (13*) played out the final few overs without threatening the home side albeit denying full bowling points, as Brooke finished their innings on 153/5, as Southwold won by 37 runs.

A fair contest saw the positive of continued form from Ezra Fuller and Shane Gosling with both bat and ball, plus the delight of watching the young skills in the Suffolk v Norfolk clash of Fuller v Wicks.
