Southwold 2nds made the long trek up the coast to Martham with only 8 players but through commitment from them all, excellent team spirit and good cricket, wrapped up a well deserved victory to put them top of their section in Level 4SE.
Jason Griffiths and Luke Bailey led the bowling attack and were both rewarded early with Griffiths trapping the home skipper Spencer (5) lbw and Bailey being too quick for J Stronach (16), clean bowling him to leave the home team 35/2. Tipping and N Stronach settled the innings down dealing well with any loose deliveries but it was Griffiths who responded well and bought Southwold back into the game, with wickets in consecutive overs bringing the ball back off the pitch to clean bowl N Stronach (14) and new batsman Abrahams (7) with the score at 83/4 after 14 overs.
Farrar joined opener Tipping and played a couple of beautiful cover drives before Griffiths once again bagged wickets in consecutive overs, removing opener Tipping lbw and Sayer well caught by Bailey at midwicket. This was Griffiths’ second five wicket haul of the season and left Martham reeling at 96/6 in the 18th over.
After a 15 minute rain break the home side responded well with an excellent 80 run 7th wicket partnership between Farrar (50) and Murrant (23) until Gosling removed them both with Farrar well caught by Clifford at deep mid on and Murrant caught and bowled at 184/8. Young Sam Bowles returned well to wrap things up, taking the final two wickets to bowl out the hosts for 185.
Clifford and Tom Cowley opened for Southwold and kept the home opening attack wicket-less until Cowley (5) was bowled by Abrahams with the score on 21. This brought the form man Gosling to the crease, who was quick to reach his 500th run of the season. Clifford road his luck and was dropped in the covers while Gosling smashed anything loose to the boundary as the pair completed a half century partnership just before another rain break.
Immediately after the break Clifford (32) was run out bringing Bailey to the crease. The home team second string attack did not cause too many problems to the visitors and slowly but surely Gosling and Bailey took control of the game while the home team became dispirited as the thought of losing to an 8 man team started to sink in and, as Gosling (83*) and Bailey (28*) scored the winnings runs to complete a century partnership,it became a reality.
An exceptional victory for the Club – a big thanks to the 8 that travelled and gave their all for the team.
